Play is the meeting of two incredible artists – Indian dancer Shantala Shivalingappa and Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, who share and weave together their roots and their respective influences. Play came into being thanks to the great Pina Bausch who was the first one who thought of bringing them together on stage. It is dedicated to her. Accompanied by both Eastern and Western musicians, Shantala Shivalingappa and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui explore the inner working of relationships using rhythmic patterns and gestural codes inspired by “kuchipudi” (a traditional dance from south-east India). Against the backdrop of a game of chess, the stage turns into a vast playing field where a minute inflection of the hand can disrupt the narrative process and thereby transform the story. It is a space dedicated to seduction, challenge, approach and infinite attempts, where male and female energies are pitted against each other with extreme care.
